Who made the first quilt? Even if we can’t answer that question there is evidence the people of Egypt made and wore quilted clothing as many as 5,000 years ago. Quilts cans provide warmth and protection as well as provided beauty and creativity to a home. While the Museum does not have any of the world’s oldest quilts, we have started a nice collection of locally made quilts. Some quilts are finished, and some are not complete or have a damage, but this gives us a way to learn about the quilting process. Along with our quilts we have a great collection of books and videos featuring many aspects of quilting. The story of the Gee’s Bend quilts is featured in some of the materials. We welcome visitors to come see our collection and our special quilt that was made around 1860 by persons unknown. This quilt was owned by George Francis Wilson, and donated by her granddaughter, Carol Ann Lydon McClendon. We know you will enjoy the quilts and we look forward to seeing you soon.
